A very happy new year with a lot of joy, health and luck wherever you go and are! Long time no hear – but now I am back with a new toy for 2017. I love that kind of stuff: gender neutral educational toys!
Last week, at the CES in Las Vegas, Lego unveiled Boost, a clever kit that introduces programming and a touch of tech to the bricks you grew up.
Lego boost will be launched in August 2017 and will be programmable via an iPhone or Android app. Boost is a simplified version of Lego Mindstorms. You can bring your creations to life with the app´s intuitive, icon-based coding interface and complete an array of exciting activities designed for each model.
Without typing you can chain together short commands to form longer sequences. Like Lego bricks themselves, Boost’s coding language is built from small chunks which can be snapped together to form more complex structures. Lego will launch a Lego Boost Creative Toolbox with 5 multifunctional models. Each set will contain Vernie the Robot, a moving and talking robot; the M.T.R.4 (Multi-Tooled Rover 4) – a robust, versatile rover with 4 different tool attachments including a spring-loaded shooter; the Guitar4000 – a musical instrument with pitch bend and sound effects; Frankie the Cat – an interactive pet that plays, purrs, expresses its mood; or the AutoBuilder – an automated production line that really builds miniature LEGO models! All for around 160 Dollars!!
The sets include interactive motors, a color&distance sensor that detects distance, motion, and color, and can also function as a light and many more details to explore!
Boost is developed to have fun first – but I love the idea that kids can learn a bit of coding on the side. They develop that coding-understanding through an accompanying app, which offers 60 activities. A drag-and-drop coding language similar to MIT’s Scratch teaches the basics of programming logic by helping kids connect the code blocks needed to elicit a given behavior. Want your Lego cat to meow on command? Simply connect the audio coding block to a motion sensor block. Voila! Any time you wave your hand in front of kitty’s face, it responds.
Let me know your new discoveries of 2017! I am very curious! Let me know your opinion on Lego´s new invention and if you are as excited as I am!
